Ponds with no fish are the habitats most commonly used by Rhioaeschna mutata. Some of these ponds are covered in water lilies, including the species called spatterdock (Paulson 2011).

Bright blue eyes and a blue face are key characteristics of spatterdock darner. Blue-eyed darner (R. multicolor) is similar but ranges to the west of spatterdock darner.
