Chordonota is made up of 8 described Neotropical species, most from South America. These flies are dark colored, and have an antennal scape length that is less than 3x its diameter. Unlike the related genus Auloceromyia the body is not patterned wasp-like with yellow.

Adults of many species of Clitellariinae frequent flowers, while the larvae live in various decomposing materials.

This fly was photographed perched on the ground, in Chaco habitat, Boquerón department, Paraguay.
