Length: 6-9 mm

 

This fly was first described in 1877 by the great dipterologist and Russian diplomat to the United States, Osten Sacken. Until relatively recently it was placed in the genus Volucella.

Copestylum avidum ranges from British Columbia south to California, Arizona, and Mexico. Adults may be found on warm days in almost any month of the year.
