Length: 8-11 mm
Meliscaeva cinctella was originally described from Europe, but it now ranges widely in the Nearctic, from Alaska to Labrador and from California to North Carolina.
Several authors have noted that this species is a "hilltopper," aggregating on hilltops for mating.
A study of the species in the Czech Republic (Jirí and Emanuel, 2001) found that there are two generations per year there, and that the color and markings of the body were strongly affected by temperature changes during the pupal stage.
