Ornidia obesa is an unusually plump Syrphid first described by Fabricius from an American specimen in 1775.
In the New World it is found in Georgia, Florida, Texas, and New Mexico, south to Argentina and Peru. It has also been introduced into other tropical areas of the world.
In normal lighting it appears brilliant green, but in the photo at left the flash has made much of the green appear black.
Despite its robust shape and heavy weight, Ornidia obesa flies and maneuvers with speed and agility.
