Plocoscelus sp., Micropezid Flies

Family: Micropezidae

Subfamily: Taeniapterinae

Fly in the photo 7.9 mm

From Mexico to Brazil members of this genus are found, in edge habitats and in damp forests especially.  Most are excellent ant mimics, both in appearance and behavior, though this is not always evident from a close-up photo.  Species in the Neotropics number seventeen, but the genus is undergoing taxonomic revision.

Flies in this genus have hyaline wings with brown transverse bands.
