Experts studying flies in this genus have found that it is a paraphyletic group; this is evident both from morphology and from molecular data. It is likely the revision of this genus will involve resurrecting some earlier generic names. At the moment, however, the genus is a large one, and some of its important characteristics are given with the photos of a Central American Taeniaptera.
