Twelve species have been described in this genus, most of them in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today all have been synonomized with Raphirhinus phosphoreus. The generic name is from the Greek and means "needle-nosed."
Raphirhinus phosphoreus is a South American species found from Colombia to Trinidad, south to Bolivia and Brazil.
