Brachystethus rubromaculatus

Red-spotted Stink Bug

Brachystethus rubromaculatus

Family: Pentatomidae

Subfamily: Edessinae

Length: Males 13.8 - 15.93 mm; females 15.0 - 17.4 mm

This genus (with 10 species) is found throughout the Neotropics. Its members are broadly oval and have a small head with wrinkled surface (Barcellos and Grazia, 2003).

One of the more colorful and distinctive Neotropical Stink Bugs, Brachystethus rubromaculatus features a coarsely punctate scutellum, and, as the scientific name says, red spots. A key characteristic of this species is the all-dark legs (dark reddish to black). Published records are from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama.

The bug shown here was photographed in Honduras.
