The Dutch entomologist Caspar Stoll described Macaria gambarina in 1781. His De Uitlandsche Kapellen (with Pieter Cramer) included descriptions of more than 1600 new species, and was the first work on tropical Lepidoptera to use the binomial system of nomenclature. The work included vivid paintings by Gerrit Wartenaar.
Among the records of Macaria gambarina are those from Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, French Guiana, and Brazil.
