Pyrrharctia isabella is a two-brooded species; the larvae develop on a diverse group of plants ranging from Corn to Elms to Asters.

The caterpillars are the familiar Banded Woolly Bears. Folklore says the width of the caterpillars' bands can be used to predict the severity of the coming winter.
