Melanoplus viridipes

Green-legged Grasshopper

Melanoplus viridipes, Green-legged Grasshopper

Family: Acrididae

Subfamily: Melanoplinae

Tribe: Melanoplini

Length: Males 17-19 mm. Females 21-25 mm

The front and middle legs are yellowish green, while the rear legs are green with black markings. The wings of the adult are quite short, less than half the length of the abdomen. There is a broad black stripe that begins behind the eye and runs all the way across the side of the pronotum.

Photo location: This Melanoplus viridipes had its photograph made in the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. While the short wings make this look like a nymph, in fact this is an adult of this short-winged species.
